7-day itinerary in southern Italy

Discover southern Campania from a countryside base

If you are planning a trip to southern Italy and want to explore different places without changing accommodation every day, this 7-day itinerary is a practical and flexible solution.

Villa Italia, near Contursi Terme and about 50 km from Salerno, can be a convenient base for visiting some of the most interesting destinations in southern Campania, combining thermal pools, countryside relaxation and day trips.

This itinerary is designed for travellers who want to experience a mix of nature, sea, history and local culture, with a balanced pace. See what else you can explore in the area.

Day 1 – Thermal pools and historic villages

Start your stay with a relaxing day at the thermal pools of Contursi Terme, ideal after a journey.

In the afternoon, visit the medieval town of Campagna, known for its historic centre, narrow streets and the Museum of Memory and Peace.

Return to Villa Italia for a quiet evening in the countryside.

Day 2 – Cilento coast and seaside towns

Drive to the Cilento coast and spend the morning at the beach in Acciaroli, known for its clear water.

In the afternoon, visit Castellabate, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, with panoramic views over the sea.

Dinner in Santa Maria di Castellabate before returning to Villa Italia.

Day 3 – Paestum and Agropoli

Visit the archaeological site of Paestum, famous for its well-preserved Greek temples.

After the visit, relax on the nearby beach.

In the afternoon, stop in Agropoli, with its old town and seaside views.

Day 4 – Caves or nature experience

Choose between two different experiences:

  • Visit the Pertosa Caves, with a unique underground boat route
  • Explore the Valle della Caccia, a natural area with waterfalls and trails

In the evening, enjoy the thermal pools of Contursi Terme, often open until late.

Day 5 – Amalfi Coast by ferry

Reach Salerno (about 50 km from Villa Italia), park your car and take a ferry to Amalfi.

This is one of the easiest and most scenic ways to visit the Amalfi Coast, avoiding traffic and parking problems.

After visiting Amalfi, you can continue to Positano or return to Salerno.

Day 6 – The Sele Valley and local villages

Explore the Sele Valley, visiting small towns such as Oliveto Citra, Valva, Colliano and Palomonte.

This is a slower day focused on local culture, landscapes and traditional food.

Day 7 – Final stop before departure

Depending on your direction:

  • If travelling north, visit Pompeii or Herculaneum
  • If travelling south, visit the Certosa di Padula, one of the largest monasteries in Italy
